Metaverse Law – A Whole New Concept for All Of Us

It is quite recent that we were introduced a whole new world, hashtag Metaverse. It feels like a Black Mirror episode, and yes, it is happening. Online world of only 2 dimensions is converting into to 3 dimensions. For now, it is anticipated that each user will spend about 1 to 2 hours weekly at the Metaverse.

Facebook teases the notion of the Metaverse in its press release, “The Metaverse is a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you. You’ll be able to hang out with friends, work, play, learn, shop, create, and more.” If users will work, play, learn, shop, create and do more, it is inevitable that users need to follow common rules, laws, regulations etc.

From personal observation, some of my colleagues are not into new technologies, where some of us are more open to change though. I believe, I belong to the second group who are eager to learn new things, and adopt. Metaverse is no exception. I feel the urge to adopt myself to this exciting world of Metaverse. And I am the luckiest since I work with Gen Z clients, who update me with a great enthusiasm each and every day, they even call me Non-Fungible Lawyer now. LOL!

If you scroll down news on Metaverse, you might read that an avatar in Metaverse insulted another avatar recently. This is a criminal law matter without a doubt, but who will pursue this crime? Which country has the jurisdiction? Which law will be applicable? What about the evidences? These are just a few questions of many to ask. More on questions, what about your privacy? Your personal data? Your clothes? Your cat maybe? Are they NFTs? How will you protect them? Theft is a real thing in Metaverse too. We will be facing claims by users against users.

As parallel to claims by users against other users, there will be also claims by users against companies running in the Metaverse. For instance, you bought a concert ticket in Metaverse, and the show is cancelled. What are your rights? Is the same consumer protection available online? Or if you injure yourself while your VR glasses are on, who will be responsible and to what extend?

Also, there is the aspect of claims of companies against other companies in Metaverse because it is obvious Facebook will not be the only company. All intellectual property law and transactional matters will be huge topics for further research and work.

Law is a living thing and it changes in line with the change itself. As lawyers, it is our mission to understand all this changing world to support users for a safe, healthy and enjoyable Metaverse experience.
