Jannik Sinner se queda fuera de los Premios Laureus por su sanción por dopaje
Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, the current world number one, has been withdrawn from the nominations for the Laureus Awards following the three-month ban he is currently serving for doping. The decision has been taken by the Laureus Academy after assessing the situation and considering that the suspension makes him ineligible for the award for the Best Sportsman of the Year.
In a statement, the Academy explained that they have closely followed the case and the resolutions of the relevant international bodies. Although they recognise the extenuating circumstances in the process, they maintain that the three-month ban prevents Sinner from being a candidate. Both the tennis player and his team have already been informed of the measure.
The finalists for the Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 will be announced on 3 March in Madrid. The awards, considered the ‘Oscars of sport’, will be presented at a ceremony scheduled for 21 April in the Spanish capital.
The nominees are selected by a jury of more than 1,300 sports journalists from around the world. Sinner, who had been considered for the award, was excluded due to his sanction by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Sinner's ban from competition
On 15 February, Sinner agreed to a three-month suspension after reaching a settlement with WADA. The punishment was imposed after the Italian tested positive for clostebol in a doping control at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in 2024.
Initially, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had declared the tennis player's innocence, but WADA appealed the decision and scheduled a hearing for April 16-17 to review his guilt. To avoid uncertainty and a possible higher sanction, Sinner reached an agreement with the body and accepted the three-month suspension, which cancelled the hearing and closed the case definitively.
Timetable for return to the track
Sinner's suspension runs from 9 February to 4 May, which will keep him out of key tournaments such as the Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Madrid Masters 1000. However, he is scheduled to return for the Rome Masters 1000, where he will return to clay-court competition.
