Mbappé hits PSG legally: demands 55 million and threatens UEFA
The legal confrontation between Kylian Mbappé and his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), is still ongoing and more ‘red hot’ than ever. Last Thursday, the current Real Madrid player's lawyers announced the seizure of 55 million euros in PSG's accounts, demanding the payment of a salary debt that, according to the player's defence, cannot be delayed any longer.
Delphine Verheyden, Mbappé's lawyer and representative, appeared alongside experts in labour, civil and criminal law, explaining that they have exhausted the amicable route and will now resort to forceful legal action to reclaim what they consider legitimate. ‘We have waited too long,’ she said, asserting that her client and many other players deserve fair treatment and respect for their contractual rights.
Account seizure and criminal proceedings against PSG
The legal team has managed to seize a sum of 55 million euros, while pursuing criminal proceedings against PSG on the grounds that the player's image and honour have been violated. The evidence presented includes allegedly offensive messages towards Mbappé and his family, which have been taken to court as a possible pressure campaign by the club.
PSG insist that the dispute is based on a verbal agreement between the player and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, which has not been formalised or registered with the league. For this reason, they argue that the matter should be resolved exclusively within the framework of the labour jurisdiction. The club describes the version of events presented by the striker's lawyers as ‘fanciful’.
Possible exclusion of PSG from European competitions
As a further measure of pressure, Mbappé's legal team has asked the French Football Federation to notify UEFA of PSG's non-payment, which could result in the club's exclusion from the Champions League and other European competitions.
‘The law is on our side, Kylian is not afraid,’ said Verheyden, referring to Al-Khelaifi's influence within European football, both at UEFA and in the French league.
A verbal agreement with no legal validity
PSG insist there was a pact with Mbappé to stop him leaving on a free transfer, justifying the non-payment of certain sums. However, the player's lawyers reject that narrative, arguing that the alleged agreement was never officially registered, which is required under French sports law.
Thomas Clay, a lawyer specialising in civil law and part of Mbappé's legal team, said that ‘it was a simple informal conversation, not a valid agreement’. According to him, any such agreement must be registered with the league to be valid, which was not the case here.
Although PSG are in a solid sporting moment, led by Luis Enrique and without relying on big media figures, Mbappé's departure remains an open wound. And now more than ever.
