Sevilla FC shareholders' meeting rejects the dismissal of the board chaired by Del Nido Carrasco
The Extraordinary General Shareholders' Meeting of Sevilla FC, held this Thursday 27 March in a hotel in the Andalusian capital, has resolved to reject the proposal of former president José María del Nido Benavente to dismiss the current Board of Directors, chaired by his own son, José María del Nido Carrasco.
A fourth meeting marked by tension
This was the fourth meeting so far this year, called again at the request of the former president, with an agenda consisting of five items, including the dismissal of the current board and the appointment of new members. The session was attended by 88.76% of the share capital, in an atmosphere of tension and disagreement among the attendees, many of whom were critical of the current management.
During the session, shouts of ‘out, out’ and ‘resignation, resignation’ were heard, in a climate of confrontation between the different groups of shareholders. José María del Nido Benavente claimed his right to vote freely, as did other like-minded minority shareholders.
Defence of the current board: legality and governance pact
For his part, Del Nido Carrasco defended the legitimacy of the current board, stressing that no irregularities have been reported to the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) and that the management team is acting in accordance with the law.
One of the main arguments of the current directors is the existence of a governance pact, signed in November 2019 by the main shareholders of the club, including Del Nido Benavente himself. This pact, they explained, is valid until December 2027, and is ‘binding and obligatory’.
The current board considers the attempt to break this agreement to be an act of bad faith and argues that no court would endorse the position of the former president, in contrast to the claims of Del Nido Benavente and his entourage.
